Dynamics of development of an altered state of consciousness
When ingesting red fly agaric first there are physiological changes (in the period from 0.5 to 2 hours, usually after 30-40 minutes), then they are joined by changes in the psyche.
Taking red fly agaric or its psychoactive substances causes a cyclically developing set of changes in the psyche, where each cycle usually includes first a phase of excitement, then a phase of inhibition of the activity of the central nervous system.
The arousal phase (lasts up to 12 hours) is characterized by an increase in the level of activation – first, the psychostimulating effects of fly agaric and mood improvement are observed, then agitation, confusion, hallucinations, etc. develop.
During the inhibition phase, exhaustion, loss of strength, lethargy, apathy, decreased pain sensitivity, severe drowsiness develop, so usually during this period there is a dream (up to 6-8 hours) with vivid dreams.
The appearance of drowsiness and sleep was also noted in experiments with muscimol (at doses of 10 and 15 mg, both phases were observed) and iboten acid (there was only a phase of depression, manifested by fatigue and drowsiness).
With a single dose of red fly agaric, such cycles can be one or more.
In the next article, we will analyze each stage in more detail.
